About Us

Women have made remarkable contributions to the field of nephrology worldwide — in both clinical care and research. Recognizing their growing impact, Women in Nephrology (WIN) was founded in 1983 as an initiative under the International Society of Nephrology. Since then, it has served as a platform to support and empower women in this specialty.

India has been home to one of the most iconic figures in nephrology — Dr. Vidya Acharya. She was:

• The first woman nephrologist in India,
• The first woman President of the Indian Society of Nephrology,
• A founding member of both the Indian Society of Nephrology and the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation,
• And one of the earliest global contributors to nephrology as a field.

Today, with over 400 women nephrologists across the country, the time is ripe to expand the movement through Women in Nephrology – India (WIN-India).

The Vision of WIN-India

WIN-India aims to:

• Ignite interest in nephrology among young medical professionals,
• Mentor and guide early-career women nephrologists through structured knowledge-sharing,
• Create a community where young practitioners learn from experienced leaders,
• And ultimately, strengthen the future of nephrology in India by empowering women across all career stages.

Our Mission

Women in Nephrology – India (WIN-India) is dedicated to sparking interest in nephrology among young medical practitioners and providing them with structured, thoughtful mentorship in all aspects of kidney health and disease. WIN-India strives to:
